    In the headlines

      New International Dispute Resolution (IDR) Group selects the City Disputes Panel for administrative support
    THE IDR GROUP is a small group of international arbitration specialists. Membership is made up of arbitrators, lawyers and other professionals from a number of countries around the world who are qualified and experienced in international commercial arbitration and other dispute resolution processes. The Group has a wide geographical spread, with members in key locations – Africa, Bangladesh, China, Europe, the Middle East, Russia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

      IDR Group launch held at the Houses of Parliament with the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland
    Lord Anderson of Swansea introduced the Attorney General, stressing her links to the Commonwealth. Baroness Scotland then spoke of the importance of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in international affairs. She welcomed the creation of the Group in a world where international trade is forever increasing.

      The Tony Curtis Debates
    As part of the MATA winter programme the annual series of debates in memory of Tony Curtis take place between 5 October and 7 December 2006. The debates will be interesting, entertaining and perhaps even controversial. Chaired by Lord Hunt and David Miles the debates are open to both practicing commercial mediators and non mediator guests. Debate topics will be: “Judges should never mediate”; “Mediation Providers no longer add value” and “Top Mediators need big egos”

      The Autonomy of Arbitrators, and Fraud unravels All
    Steven Gee QC examines from an international perspective how improper conduct may impact upon the enforcability of an arbitration award. The Article was first published in "Arbitration International" vol22 No3 and we are grateful for their permission to repeat it.



    What's in the ADR news and information zone

      Out of Court Newsletter - 8th Edition
    The 8th Edition of the Out of Court Newsletter issued by her Majesty's Court Service is now available. The latest news from HMCS about their initiatives to promote mediation and other forms of ADR are covered in the newsletter, as well as news on the re-launched National Mediation Helpline.


      Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Workplace
    With the number of applications to employment tribunals still high and the prohibitive cost of pursuing a case through the courts, interest is growing in alternative dispute resolution. Paul Suff looks at the situation in this extract from the IRS Employment Review.


      Resolving Costs Disputes
    In this article Martin Ellis, a retired senior costs judge, discusses the increase in costs disputes and offers a simple method of resolution. Mr Ellis is a specialist panellist with the City Disputes Panel.


      Mediation – Resolving Conflict
    This article explains the effectiveness and general conduct of mediation as a process for resolving conflict in the conduct of business relationships. It does so by illustrating two scenarios, one, the common effects of taking a dispute to court and, two, of engaging a professional and independent mediator to assist the parties to work together to explore the issues within their dispute and to identify opportunities as to how they may resolve the dispute.
